TENDING TO A CLASSIC - HOW TO REWAX YOUR BARBOUR JACKET

There’s something special about a well-loved Barbour. It carries the scent of country walks, the thrill of adventures, and the quiet pride of a jacket that’s lasted generations. But over time, that iconic wax finish fades and that’s where the magic of rewaxing comes in. It’s not just maintenance; it’s tending to a piece of heritage.

Here’s our simple, timeless method to bring your Barbour back to life. Before you reach for anything, start with the pinch test. It’s the simplest way to know if your jacket is ready. Gently pinch a small section of fabric between your thumb and forefinger; if white lines appear, it is time.

Never put your Barbour in the washing machine; it will strip what wax remains and ruin the fabric. Instead, treat it to a gentle hand wash with some dish soap mixed in cold water and a sponge. Wipe the jacket gently all over, following the direction of the fabric grain. Don’t scrub too hard—just enough so you’re lifting dirt. Pay extra attention to cuffs, collars, and the hem.

Using the Barbour Thornproof wax, warm the tin slightly so it spreads easily. In circular motions, rub it in thinly and evenly with a clean cloth. I prefer to work in sections. Using a bamboo stick covered in the cloth can help you get to the hard-to-reach areas. Don’t overload your cloth; thin layers build up better than one thick coat. Once finished, hang up to dry and soon enough your beloved jacket will be as good as new.
